By glow of the tail-light
I stumbled back of the car
and stood by the heap …

for him it’s always dusk
always the whitetails
bounding silver-eyed and stupid
headlong against his grill

again and again
the small explosion of white
the hopeless flank
flashing the point
of dim-eyed regret

nightmares scream him
awake with sounds
of antlered perfection
being ravaged
by roadside crows

he can’t help hearing
the wilderness listen in
