Near Cooper Marsh

by Jesse P. Ferguson

The Creek Behind My House

black rubber boots
            succumb to brown water
deep down in primeval muck
            in wet sponge mud

shrill whistle of redwings
            in cattails
and the long pined-for
            sting
of first mosquito

clay holds on
            to your boots
and as you squirm free
            smacks its chops
like a smiling boy
            hungry for hotdogs
picking souvenir leeches
            from his winter-white leg
